Psychedelic-assisted Therapy

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is gaining attention as a possible option for treating a range of conditions including PTSD, treatment resistant depression, and end-of-life distress. The science is promising; for some people, psychedelic assisted therapy offers a new means to heal trauma and break free of troubling thinking and behavioural patterns.
However, the therapeutic use of psychedelics must be introduced wisely and by trained professionals. I can offer a safe, client centred approach to supporting people who choose to use psychedelic medicines as part of their overall treatment plan for healing in mental health.
My services include psychedelic therapy consultation, facilitation and integration within a harm-reduction context.

Why is screening necessary?

Those seeking psychedelic assisted therapy MUST be properly screened to ensure physical and emotional safety. I do the initial screening with clients which entails:
Mental and Physical Health Evaluation: Screening typically assesses an individual’s mental health history (e.g., history of psychosis, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia) and any physical health conditions that could interact negatively with the psychedelic experience.
Medication Review: Some medications, like SSRIs, benzodiazepines, and certain other psychiatric drugs, can interact with psychedelics, potentially altering the experience or increasing risks. The therapist will review any current medications to ensure compatibility.
Goals and Expectations: With clients, I explore the reasons for seeking psychedelic therapy, including specific mental health goals (e.g., relief from depression, anxiety, PTSD, or addiction) and overall intentions. This helps align expectations and clarify goals.
Preparation for the Experience: Once an individual is screened and approved for psychedelic therapy, preparation sessions often include discussions on what to expect, the potential range of experiences, and guidance on how to navigate challenging emotions or visions that may arise during the session.

What is a psychedelic-assisted therapy session?

I offer sessions involving the use of psychedelics like psilocybin or MDMA, taken in a safe and supportive setting, in the presence of two highly trained, trauma-informed therapists, as per clinical trial protocols.
The journey itself is an intentional therapeutic experience designed to help clients explore their consciousness, confront difficult emotions, and gain new insights.

What is integration?

After a psychedelic-assisted session, integration is ESSENTIAL and not automatic. I assist clients as they make sense of, process, and apply insights from the psychedelic experience.
Reflecting on Insights and Experiences: Integration sessions help clients make sense of the emotional and cognitive insights from their psychedelic journey, especially if they encountered difficult or confusing elements.
Developing New Perspectives: Many people experience shifts in perspective, self-concept, or interpersonal relationships after a psychedelic experience. Integration therapy helps them navigate and internalize these shifts in a healthy, sustainable way.
Implementing Positive Changes: Integration work involves setting intentions or action steps to incorporate any positive changes inspired by the experience, such as forming new habits, improving relationships, or fostering a healthier mindset.
Support and Guidance: The therapist provides a supportive environment where clients feel safe discussing their experiences. This support is crucial in helping clients process intense emotions or overcome challenges as they make changes inspired by the session.
Together, screening and integration enhance the safety, effectiveness, and long-term benefits of psychedelic therapy, making it a more grounded, accessible approach to personal growth and healing.
